I just moved to Chicago and was looking for a new stylist. Based on their great online reviews, I made an appointment at J. Gordon for a cut and style, and it was fantastic. Really, really, nice people. A really cute environment (lots of antiques and art). The shampoo was great . Many thanks to everyone for making me feel so comfortable on my first visit to a new salon. I love my hair and will defintiely be back.

Pros: The nicest staff. Excellent work. I love my hair!

What a wonderful experience I had last night being a first time client at J. Gordon! Having gone to the same salon now for a couple of years, I was nervous to make the change. After arriving at J Gordon, I immediately felt at ease and comfortable. From the time I walked in the salon to the time I left, everyone was very friendly and down to earth. I went in for a haircut (wanting suggestions for a change) and highlights. Mina (senior stylist & colorist who was extremely friendly) consulted me and offered a nice idea/change for my hairstyle which is what I wanted! Seems hard to find, for me anyways! The cut and highlights turned out great and I am very pleased. I was also surprised & very pleased when Nora washed my hair and also gave me a relaxing neck & shoulder massage as well! Wow! Walked into work this morning and received some nice compliments! I definitely plan on going back to Mina at J Gordon!

Pros: Great cut & highlights/low lights, very friendly staff and quaint European feel

Cons: Everything Great!

I was referred to J. Gordon Designs by a friend after getting a terrible color job at another local salon. My highlights were way too brassy and way, way too bold and chunky. I saw Nikki for my color, and she was able to fix the highlights by adding some more highlights and lowlights to my hair and toning down the brass. I think this is the best my color has ever looked. Everyone was so friendly and I felt very comfortable in the salon, even though I arrived with a big challenge. I definitely recommend this salon.

At J. Gordon Designs, we take the quality of our work and customer satisfaction very seriously. We have been in business for 35 years, and have worked diligently to earn the respect and trust of the community that we service. We are troubled by the review posted by Lish4. First, we hope that it was not written by an unethical competitor, as sometimes happens on CItySearch. They write bad reviews about others, and glowing reviews about themsleves. However, if it truly was written by a guest in our salon, we greatly regret that you were unhappy with your service. We wish that you had contacted us so that we could have corrected your highlights if you felt they were too light. And, we could have given you a treatment to moisturize your hair. All new clients receive a follow-up card encouraging them to call if any part of their experience was unsatisfactory, and we never heard from you. In fact, we offer all of our clients a complimentary "re-do" within 2 weeks of a service if any aspect of it does meet with their satisfaction. Also, I feel I must add, for those of you who may have read the review, we NEVER "do whatever we want," especially with color. We always do a consultation, discuss options and upkeep, and come to a mutual understanding about what will be done before we begin a service. Perhpas there was some miscommunication, and I apologize if this was the case. To Lish4, I wish you had given us the opportunity to correct anything you may have been unhappy with. But, I also understand that you might not have felt comfortable or confident returning to the same stylist/colorist if your experience was not what you ahd hoped for. You mentioned that you had visited the salon a few months prior to your recent CitySearch posting. I hope you will contact me. I heard this place was great for color. This was my first time getting highlights, and I told her to feel free to do as she pleased. My hair was dark brown, and I received very blonde highlights. This was not the look I was going for, not to mention how bad it dried my hair out. Several months later I still have the frizz. The cut wasn't too bad, but who can tell with hair that stands out 6 inches from your head?? Not recommended for the price, time, and end result!

I have been a very happy client at this salon for more than 10 years. About 3 years ago, I moved out of Lincoln Park, but I still come back for my cut and color. Jerry and his staff have always been warm and accomodating to my requests. I have seen several different stylists at J. Gordon and they all have been excellent. No attitude here! Keep up the good work!

I recently moved to California and one thing I miss the most is J. Gordon! I always went to Sarah for cuts and highlights, and she's fantastic. I like the smaller size and the atmosphere, it was always warm, inviting, and relaxing. The staff is friendly and skilled, which I've really come to appreciate in looking for someone new here! It's a good value, and I definitely recommend it to anyone.

Pros: skill level, atmosphere, friendly staff

Cons: street parking

I was given mixed reviews on this place. But I thought I would give it a shot because it looked so nice. Yeah I said I like fun and maybe a little over the top hair, and I left looking like a soccer mom. But maybe thats just their clientelle. Receptionist made me uncomfortable. I guess its what you would imagine a high end salon to be like. I won't go back, but I can see why others may enjoy that type of environment. I hate to leave a bad review, but I just didn't care for it much. Sorry. I think its a nice place for a different age group or type of person/style.

Pros: Nice building, location, and ambiance

Cons: Not very diverse, stuffy

Melissa does color like no other. She really listens to what you want and makes it happen, even if it needs to be done in nonconventional ways. Sometimes the salon is really busy and you may have to wait to have your hair washed, but once you do, the neck massage is amazing. Highly recommend!

When my last hairdresser left her salon, I decided to try somewhere new. I had walked past this salon many times, and decided to stop in for a consultation. It was so charming and everyone was so nice. It is filled with antique pictures and lots of beautiful things. The receptionist was very helpful, and I stayed for a cut and some highlights. Everyone was very professional, and I loved my hair. Since then, I have sent many of my friends, and all of them have been very happy with their hair. This place is true gem.
