Whimsical '70s memorabilia and clever dishes are served at this Roscoe Village eatery.

by Contributor at Citysearch

The Scene
This neighborhood favorite revels in retro reverence, from the color-flecked Formica tables to the sun-yellow and lime-green walls. A Leif Garrett album rests on a windowsill, while customers entertain themselves with miniature Mr. Potato Heads, Magic 8 balls and other time-tested toys.

The Food
Despite the tiny kitchen, portions are generous, and food arrives fast. Enormous bread slices fan out in triplicate to build an incredible French toast tower, with sauteed banana, peach and pineapple compote. The Green Eggs & Ham ... Sam breakfast includes eggs scrambled with spinach pesto, scallions and smoked ham. And where else could you possibly order Twinkie tiramisu or a Pop-Tart sundae? Service comes with a smile, plenty of refills of Seattle's Best coffee and scandalously low prices. Kitsch'n is open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays only, when "TV dinner entrees" include fillet-cut portobello mushrooms served over herbed polenta and "Wow" pot pies.

Retro Brunch Revival

by tommy_234 at Citysearch

Kitsch'n cooks up some of the best signature dishes for brunch in the city. My personal favorites: Spicy-Crazy Eggs, Chile-quiles (the hangover cure!), Fried Chicken and Waffles, and their Coconut French Toast! The staff is extremely nice, and the crowd can run the gambit from 20-somethings to old-timers. I'd describe it as kind of a dive-bar meets 70's-chic urban hipster place - but don't let that fool you because the food is great, there is good service, and the place is clean and oozes cool decor (set the wayback machine for 1975). The wait is usually quick for parties of 2, and the few times we've gone with a group it hasn't taken too long either (20 min. max) - the spicy bloody mary's help the wait go by fast!

  • Pros: Great Food, Homemade Spicy Bloody Mary, Nice Staff
  • Cons: Can get busy (but the waits isn't too long)

Delicious Dinners, Too!

by jenniferlewis47 at Citysearch

My boyfriend and I just had dinner here, and enjoyed every bite. The tortilla chip/mango salsa appetizer was delicious, as were our meals. I'm sure their breakfast and brunch are also quite tasty, but if you're not wanting to battle the crowds, try 'em in the evening. We'll definitely be returning soon!

  • Pros: Fun atmosphere, Delicious food
  • Cons: Cramped seating

Kitsch'n Brunch Rocks!

by kenny65 at Citysearch

I can't believe I just found out about this place yesterday. They make the best spicy bloody marys in town and really know what to dish up for brunch! The spicy dishes especially, they dont hold back the heat on, and killer coconut french toast as well. Our waitress was extreemly cool and hooked us up with incredible recommendations (for food and brunch cocktails). It's very homey and has a unique "lived in" feel to it with tons of great vintage paraphenalia all around. They also served our food on fiesta-ware! File under "not to miss... and leave the attitude at home and unwind". Cheers!

  • Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly Staff, Good Scene

Best of? are you CRAZY??

by glenda2020 at Citysearch

The ambiance was great 70's stuff- trip down memory lane. That said, it was all downhill from there. Our waitress didn't arrive until the table seated immediately after us had already ordered. We only got one glass for water, and the carafe had a fleck of food the glass had some gunk, as well as chipped top along the top... and, after asking for a glass, and getting a snotty response from the waitress, I didn't even bother pointing out that the glass was dirty. When the food arrived, it was stone cold (french toast and grits)- while the crab cakes were lukewarm.

Given above, we didn't even bother commenting on the food (which would have been tasty if it were warm)- and they never did ask us "how was everything?". The 70's stuff was great, but the service and the food AWEFUL.

  • Pros: Food is average
  • Cons: service

Try again

by karrie313 at Citysearch

I live in Roscoe Village and I have never understood all the buzz about Kitsch'n. I've eaten there on several occassions and always felt it was a average to below average experience. The restaurant is crowded because it is quite small and offers a limited menu which is less than inspiring. The cramped quarters does not contribute positively to the ambiance and as there are often small children present it makes for a noisey, hurried meal. It's clean and the service is always pleasant, and they do serve a tastey bloody mary, but if you're looking for a comfy, casual brunch try another restaurant.

  • Pros: service, bloody mary
  • Cons: small, crowded rooms, loud

a fun time for some brunch

by lurchl at Citysearch

The brunch menu here is quite good, and the place serves great bloody marys. I can't see it as much of a family place, but definitely a fun time for reasonable prices.

Too Cool for School

by ana riis at Citysearch

What a great place! The atmosphere is 1970's chic and naturally funky with amazing "found" items and the music, mood, and room-feel is both comfortable and casual. Perhaps best of all, the food was utterly fantastic - real, satiating (sp?), and delicious. The sincere waitresses and friendly kitchen guys made us feel like right at home.

I expexted more!

by iaceves at Citysearch

From the reviews, I thought it would be great to go and have some breakfast w/the family, but I was disappointed! The food was just okay. My daughter who loves french toast and always finishes her food did not like her french toast and left more than half food on her plate.
