This place has got to have, by far, the best all-vegetarian food I have ever had. Forget about all the meat-like substances and inappropriate use of tofu you'll find in most "vegetarian" meals - this place appropriately puts it all to shame. Brilliant foods like the BBQ Twist sandwich, a really nice lentil soup, or their black bean burger keep their customers coming back - many of which seem to drive all the way out from neighborhoods like Wicker Park and Hyde Park. Staff is ultra-friendly and the neighborhood is a friendly, middle-class residential area.

  • Pros: Amazing food, Healthy, Unique
  • Cons: Far for north siders

I love this restaurant! I drive all the way from Detroit to go here. The best pulled "pork" sandwich I've ever had.

  • Pros: Great food! WOW!

The worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. It took us two hours to eat at 2pm when there were only two other tables eating. We waited 35 minutes for our server to take our order and 45 minutes to get our food once we ordered. 15-20 minutes to get our bill after we were done. Our appetizer came out after our other food. Twice we were belittlingly shewed away by employees when we asked once for our server and once for our food after waiting patiently for a very generous time. Not only did they not help us when we asked, but one of them literally waved us off. Three tables that came in after us ordered, ate, and left before we got our food. When we told our server this, he didn't seem to care. He didn't apologize, or offer to make it up to us in any way. In my opinion a business that treats its customers so poorly shouldn't be in business.

On top of that, the food was mediocre at best. Deep fried vegetables are hard to mess up. The split pea soup was watery and the cornbread was hard.. The strawberry heaven drink was tasty but hardly worth a drive from the downtown and being treated so poorly.

I love food, am easily wooed by great soul food, and can almost always find something redeeming about a restaurant, but I couldn't believe how bad this restaurant was. I was so excited to try it after reading all the reviews here, but it failed to meet any expectations. If you believe in supporting restaurants that value and respect their customers DON'T GO HERE.

Soul Vegetarian has the greatest, thirst-quinching, mouth-watering, food from city-to-city, state-to-state, and country-to-country. Food and healthy eating can get "no better than this." Foods such as battered tofu, battered cauliflower, stir-fry, lasagna, kale greens, baked macaroni, veggie gyros, all vegan deserts which are excellent, hand-burgers, pizza puffs, and the list continues.

There is also a deli next door; but not a traditional deli. This deli is better! There are all sorts of vegetables and foods that makes your "liver quiver." If you are on a strict regiment this is the place for you, if you have a desire to lose a few pounds-this is for you, if you are interested in doing something for dinner a little different or just an awesome experience; I highly recommend this restaurant! Whatever your tastes this is it! Patience is a virtue, though, as this restaurant tries every portion. However, service is with a smile and the people are always pleasant. If you drive down 75th Street and smell something that reasonates within your spirit; beyond a shadow of a doubt.....it is this restaurants food you are smelling!

Happy and Healthy Eating!!!

Best,

TMT

I love this restaurant. I ate there on a BUSY Saturday night and received excellent service and awesome food. I ordered the daily special and was treated to delicious vegetarian food with a soul food twist. I'll be back! P.S. The Prince salad dressing is incredible.

  • Pros: Great food at great prices. An extensive menu.

This is by far the best Vegetarian Restaurant that I have EVER been to. The menu is diverse, and you can always find a dish that will satisfy you, no matter what you are in the mood for. My husband always orders the daily special, which is different each time, but excellent. ONLY complaint: Would make millions more if it were located in Downtown Chicago.

  • Pros: Great, Flavorful Veg Food AND Friendly Staff
  • Cons: Location

Soul Vegetarian East is a sort of legendary place if you're a vegetarian. Their food is amazing, and you wouldn't believe some of the things you're eating aren't full of meat. They work magic with soy and tempeh, and not to mention the deep fryer! The food here isn't necessarily your typical ideal of healthy vegetarian food, but it sure is delicious, from their barbeque sandwiches to the fried onion rings and cauliflower. We're talking true soul food. The only downside is the service, which is spotty at best. If you're willing to wait for your food and have it show up in random intervals, you'll be in for a real treat!

I love this restaurant! It is only 15 minutes from my house unlike all the other vegetarian restaurants that are all on the north side. This restaurant has good prices. I have to say the service isn't also very friendly, but the great food makes up for that, making it one of my favorite places to eat. During peak time, the parking can be hard in which I will usually park in the permit parking only area. I haven't gotten a ticket yet, so I dont know if I am just lucky or they dont care!

  • Pros: cheap price, great food
  • Cons: unfriendly service

This restaurant is located on a pretty barren, depressing strip of 75th Street, but the food makes this vegan spot a must-try. The jerk tofu wrap and the veggie burger are incredible, the fruit shakes are delicious, and the house-made sweet potato pie alone is worth the trip. The service, however, is horrendous. They're certainly nice enough, but unbelievably slow. My friend's food came out first. After 15 minutes of waiting, I flagged down a waitress to ask about my dish. It finally came out about 20 minutes after my friend's entree. I saw people waiting for take-out sitting there for almost an hour. I'd advise calling ahead for to-go instead of dining in.

  • Pros: Great food
  • Cons: Bad service

In Short
This gathering spot is popular with students of African culture and steadfast fans of meat-alternative and non-dairy dishes. Wholesome brown lentil soup or fried tofu sticks with vegan tartar sauce are solid starters; the Garvey is a filling wheat gluten veggie-burger, and the (gluten) barbecue roast sandwich just might outdo the real thing. Daily specials like Salisbury "steak," salads with homemade dressing, and desserts like spice cake and peach pie round out the menu.

  • Pros: good vegetarian foodvalue prices
