AUTHENTIC ITALIAN Bliss.......
by Barbiedoll20
I grew up in an Italian neighborhood and this place takes me back. This place is hands down THE BEST place for Sub sandwiches. Everything is always fresh and you just cannot beat the price. There is ALWAYS a line in there, but the service is excellent and fast. It is definately worth the wait. If you are in a hurry, call and order ahead. About 2 months ago, I bought a prime rib roast from the butcher. It was also the best that I have ever had ANYWHERE! Also, stop by next door to D'amato's Bakery. They use coal fired ovens to bake their bread and it is simply wonderful. 2 VERY AUTHENTIC Italian places still left in the City. I consider myself a very lucky patron of both...Keep up the good work guys!! Frank the butcher is wonderful!! Please don't ever change!!
- Pros: Everything!
- Cons: Small space, no parking lot, short hours on Sunday
Magnifico Bari
by HeyNowLDT
I am lucky enough to live across the street from Bari. That explains why I eat it on average of three times a week. I love their Italian subs, but I also like getting the meat from their butcher shop. The bread is from D'Amato's Bakery located right next door. The guys behind the counter are experts at making the sandwiches and butchering your favorite cuts of meat. The hot giardinara is what completes the Italian sub, but you won't be disappointed with the meatball or sausage sandwiches, either. Bari has some of the best sausages in Chicago. I prefer the Barese sausage to the classical Italian sausage. The Barese is made with garlic, herbs, and sheep's casing, while the Italian has fennel and pig casing. I recommend calling ahead with your order, or you could face a long (possible half hour) wait. Bari is one of the true gem's of Chicago.
- Pros: Value, Service
- Cons: Parking, Long Lines
Great Food and Prices

The subs are great and made right in front of you. The bread, meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes are always fresh. My favorite is the italian followed closely by the corned beef sub.
- Pros: Great sandwiches
- Cons: The store hours could be longer

The best Italian Sub
by malexan
The best Italian sub i have ever had was here at Bari. The only sub that comes close was one in Revere MA but that closed. The 9 inch is plenty and i swear the foot long is more like 16 inches. Sometimes the wait can be long during lunch on sat so order ahead. Try the 9 inch hot italian you will not be sorry.
- Pros: Italian Sub, The pickle
- Cons: Parking can be hard

The Scene
This little River West market comprises three narrow, packed aisles, all leading to the busy butcher and deli counters in back. A single manual cash register sits opposite a small fresh produce section near the entrance, and refrigerators line one wall. The clientele is a mix of long-time neighborhood folks and the condo-dwellers currently gentrifying the area.
The Food
There's an extensive, well-priced selection of olive oil, pasta, sauces, and other Italian and Mediterranean imports. In dairy, grocery, and
sundries they cover all the bases, though the selection is cramped by space limitations. The deli does a thriving sub trade, employing a small army of sandwich-makers at lunchtime; imported sausage, cheeses, and olives round out the deli case. The diminutive butcher counter houses a full selection of meat and poultry with great prices. Tasty Italian beef and sausage, veggies giardiniera, tomato sauce, and white beans and escarole are all made fresh in-house.
Bari Foods - Best Italian Sub Anywhere
by dragonpride
This old-school Italian deli and grocery store serves up some tasty sandwiches. The Italian sub (capicola, mortadella, Genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, seasoned oil and home-made giardiniera) is a fan favorite and it's the best I've ever tasted. Choose from mild, medium or hot versions. And at $4 for a 9-inch, $5 for a 12-inch you won't quibble about the price either.
- Pros: Best italian subs, Home-made giardiniera, Great value
- Cons: Location
