Overview
The Old Town School looks and feels like a real school, from the stout brick exterior to the long dormer windows on either side of the entrance. On the ground floor are a few sunny classrooms and the building's old auditorium, which has been converted into the main bi-level concert hall with a proscenium stage and cushioned pew-style seats. Performances have included Brandford Marsalis, klezmer bands and a summertime Wednesday night Latin music series.
The Experience
Students immerse themselves in a variety of instruction that goes well beyond the boundaries of folk music. Besides teaching the fundamentals of guitar and banjo, the eight-week classes at the Old Town School offer instruction on a host of music-related topics such as Tahitian drumming, flamenco dancing, vocal harmony and songwriting. For instruments and more, browse the center's Different Strummer Music Store, which stocks dozens of guitars, banjos, drums and other instruments; sheet music; how-to videos; and compact discs.
Great for budding musicians

The Old Town School offers a great variety of classes. The guitar classes for kids are especially popular -- we've found the teachers to be incredibly patient and understanding. Be aware, though, the weekend classes fill up in no time, so register early.
