Couples and students looking for something different find it in this dimly lit, homey and hip Loyola-area bar and restaurant.
by Elisa Kronish
The Scene
It's just down the road from Loyola University, but this is no college-kid hangout. It's aimed at discerning students and 30-somethings in Rogers Park. A hand-built oak and slate bar up front is classy and comfortable. Lacquered wood tables, black ceiling panels, indirect lighting and black-velvet curtains create a moody, intimate space that's conversation-friendly 'till the music cranks up later.
The Food
The casual menu focuses on comfort food from all over the map. Toothsome quesadillas get grilled for a boost of flavor; shrimp and artichoke bake makes another amazing starter, chock-full of baby shrimp, artichoke hearts and creamy Parmesan cheese, baked crispy on top and served in a casserole dish. Mains include spanakopita, penne primavera and super-tender cinnamon-grilled pork chops topped with lip-burning peach-jalapeno chutney. Sides of mac and cheese side are as good as it gets, while the must-try finish is homemade cobbler of the day.
