Swedish Bakery made our wedding cake and did a wonderful job. Everything from the planning, delivery, to the cake itself was great. I would highly recommend everyone who is looking for a wedding cake to schedule a meeting with Swedish Bakery to see what they can do for you.

  • Pros: the french butter creme frosting

When I visit Chicago, this place is a must. (And I also enjoy care packages from my sister!) They've been in business for 75 years, 25 in the same family. Their coffee cakes, cookies, pastries, and bread taste like they just came from my Swedish grandmother's oven.

Thanks to a beautiful co-worker who treated our office to many of the excellent items on the Swedish bakery menu, there was only one, I do not recommend, and that is that white-chocolate ganache (yuck!) One of the nastiest cakes I've ever tasted.

  • Pros: Most items are sweet tooth satisfiers

Way understaffed!!!!

I have waited for 20 minutes before getting my number called and its just isn't worth it.

You have to go at a time when its not so busy-but forget the weekend. The cookies are SO ridiculously overpriced for a bakery its size, and so are the cakes-pretty much everything is high. For what you pay for the service s*cks.

Also-had a cake ordered for my graduation and there was so much buttercream between the cake layers that we couldn't taste the cake; BAD CAKES!

  • Pros: Good cupcakes, croissants
  • Cons: EXPENSIVE, BAD SERVICE, SLOW SERVICE

Located in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, once a Swedish enclave but today a rich diversity of ethnic cultures and cuisines. This bakery is one of the best I've been to, and others must agree because lines on weekends can be long. More than just Swedish favorites here. A large display case has beautiful pastries from Napoleans to petit fors, many kinds of cookies, pies, breads cakes, muffins and coffecakes. One item looks better than the next, which makes it hard to choose! Prices reasonable but be prepared to wait during peak times.

PROS: Huge selection, high quality

CONS: Can be long wait on weekends and before holidays

The cinnamon raisin bread at 'Swedish Bakery' in Chicago's Andersonville neighbourhood, stands alone as the best in the city. If you want to be really decadent, use the bread to make french toast (or is it 'freedom' toast:).

And if you are celebrating a birthday, order their glazed strawberry cake with the birthday message written on a strip of green marzipan.

Be prepared for a lengthy wait, as the line can be fairly long.

  • Pros: Cinnamon Raisin Bread
  • Cons: None

The Swedish Bakery retains its high quality throughout the years. They offer a great selection of freshly baked cookies and pastries. Everyone can find something they like there. Sometimes the wait is long, but it's worth it to get exactly what you want. They counter staff is helpful and patient as you pick out your sweets. Everything is impeccibly made and displayed, and the store is very clean. They will wrap up your choices for you to take home, even if it's just a few cookies. I've bought cakes here for special occasions and was proud to serve them. It's in a fun part of Andersonville where you can walk around and visit shops and restaurants. Make a special trip to the Swedish Bakery for some wonderful pastries.

I was amazed after visiting the Swedish Bakery as to the low quality of the pastries we purchased. After hearing about how good everything was, I left feeling cheated.
