The Scene
A favorite of longtime neighborhood regulars--and an Andersonville institution since 1934--this low-ceilinged, low-lit and low-maintenance hang attracts one of the most diverse
crowds on the North Side (equal parts gay and straight, young and old). Intriguing Viking figures and nautical paraphernalia dominate the decor behind the long bar; across the aisle, small tables line a wall bearing an elaborate but deteriorating hunting mural. Bartenders seem disaffected, but are timely with drinks.
The Draw
The long, rectangular space can get noisy on weekend nights, and it's no wonder--with one of the better jukeboxes around (anything from old Stones to new indie pop) and bargain prices on quality cocktails, the customers just keep coming. Those who show up early enough on a weeknight are likely to have the pleasure of chatting up one of the ancient regulars; if not, a muted TV up front shows everything from sports to campy movies.…
