FUN BAR!

by tbagger at Citysearch

I love Big Chicks. As others have mentioned here, they have a great Sunday afternoon FREE bar-b-que (rain or shine, summer or winter). The staff is always super friendly and eager to please. The girl that works weekday afternoons makes the best cosmos in the city!!! I like to go on Wednesdays or Saturday nights to play euchre with the euchre club!

  • Pros: Great food and mixed drinks. Great prices. Friendly. Euchre on Sat. & Wed.
  • Cons: Can get quite smoky

Changes underway

by stickfire at Citysearch

2 years ago I wrote a review for this place. To sum it up, I went midweek to find about 20 regulars and 2 bartenders. All men. My g/f and I were stared at, ignored, then treated rudely. We have both worked service industry and that night was her birthday. We were not going to let a bunch of pretentious gay boys ruin our night, so we left and vowed to never go back.

Fast forward almost 2 years to now... The place is definitely changing. My guests from out of town begged me to re-visit this place and I was pleasantly surprised with the changes.

There is at least 1 night per week geared towards women and transgender folks and there is now a qweer woman manager. There are female bartenders even. There are still lots of pretentious gay boy regulars, but they are much more tolerable when there are hot women in the same room.

I now have only praise for this place. It's always packed, but you can still push up to the bar for a draft beer. This is becoming a great Qweer hangout. Nice Job!

  • Pros: location, woman owned, drink specials, women & trannies present
  • Cons: pretentious regulars, neighborhood still a little sleezy but getting better

This Uptown tavern is one of the most straight-friendly gay taps you'll ever encounter.

The Scene
A world away from the primped-and-posing Boys Town scene, Big Chicks attracts a laid-back, all-ages crowd of regular guys and a few gals, clad in suits and ties, shorts and Tevas, and everything in between. Sit at the massive antique bar, play darts or pool, or have a seat in the beer garden out back.

The Draw
There's never a cover, and owner Michelle Fire goes all out for her customers, handing out free shots, raffling off prizes and hosting free barbecues in the summertime. On Wednesday nights, participate in two of this spot's rituals--euchre night (at 7pm) and $3 Absolut martini night. The card playing takes place in a long supper-clubby room next to the main bar area, which doubles as a packed, steamy dance floor on weekend nights.

Being a rabid teetotaler, I don't go to bars often, but there is something about Big Chick's that is definitely appealing...Yes, it is the friendliest gay bar in town...nothing prissy here...just good fun!

  • Pros: Off the beaten path, Friendly Staff
  • Cons: Off the beaten path

I have to rate it

by Dommer at Citysearch

There was a time, when me and my friends were single, that we would go to Big Chicks 3 days a week and have great fun. I go every now and then, and the best part about this bar is the fact that real people go there. If you need a break from the superficialities of boystown, this is the place.

  • Pros: Good-looking men, Great service, Easy to get to
  • Cons: Bad neighborhood, Small dance floor

Michelle is the best!

by sephia3 at Citysearch

By far my favorite bar in the world! It's always homey...the bartenders are awesome. If you take care of them they'll take care of you. I rarely ever see other bar owners working the crowds to make sure everyone is doing ok. Free shots at midnight! Free food and cheap booze on the weekends. You won't regret a visit to Chicks!

  • Pros: Parking lot, Easy going crowd, No attitude
  • Cons: sometimes crowded

Fabu!

by bstarzynski at Citysearch

I've never felt so at home and so comfortable at a bar before. The staff is totally attentive, and Michelle is the most generous owners out of any of the Gay Bars in Chicago. (Yes, I've been to every one!) She's there most of the time to ensure that everyone is always taken care of! The staff, is curteous and attentive. They even serve the martini's with ice crystals floating on top! It's not a pretty bar, but if you're they're to meet friends (gay or straight) everyone is welcome. AND THERE'S NO ATTITUDE!!!!!!!!

Blissful Sundays

by crumms1 at Citysearch

Big Chick's is a relaxing way to hang out with your closest (and soon to be closest) friends on Sunday afternoons. Their vodka lemonades are tops and the burgers are among my favorites. This is the only bar I choose to commute in from the 'burbs for on a regular basis!

  • Pros: nice atmosphere, good food, great drinks
  • Cons: need more tables, needs to be bigger
