Best Independent Designer Selection and Best Customer Service
by niccolo28chicago at Citysearch
I love this store! The review above (the citysearch one) is a little outdated (i.e. no more Felix), but this boutique is absolutely worth a visit at least once-or twice- a season! They always have the best new items for fashionable 20, 30 and 40-somethings who want to be trendy but not over the top. I find things here I feel like I can't find anywhere else. A lot of their designers are from New York and L.A., but a few of the jewelry designers are from Chicago.
Make sure to get on their mailing list so you are notified of the great events they have every now and then. And if you make friends with the girls who work there they call you when the new styles come in. They are always friendly and give great advice on how and what to wear your clothes.
- Pros: Excellent customer service, Great Selection
This specialty shop is all about one-on-one wardrobing.

The Scene
Awash in tranquil, buttery colors with sisal rugs, sculpted lighting and specialty service, Public I is a pampering, post-work pit stop. Fashionable but frazzled professionals pop in for regular wardrobe assessments from a bubbly staff always ready with a helpful nudge in the right direction. A one-of-a-kind feel pervades, thanks to the store's thoughtful stock and "one of each size" selection.
The Goods
Women are the main focus, although a small but growing collection of menswear, including items by Felix, debuted in 2001. For gals, gotta-have-it handbags from Glenda Geis, '80s-tinged slit-neck shirts from In the Now and classically tailored suiting from How & Wen prove valuable as wardrobe staples. The range of can-wear couture to everyday outfitting includes everything from re-imagined vintage fabrics to sassy "Sex and the City" chic.
A Great Independent Store
by bkerry at Citysearch
I have shopped at this store many times and find it is still one of the best overall independent stores in Chicago. The prices are consistent with quality designer styles and the service is excellent... they actually take time to help you. I especially love the travel and gift area in the rear of the store --- great travel bags and a nice selection of gifts under $100.
- Pros: Quality, Value, Service
- Cons: Parking on Weekends
Customer Service?
by seanp7777 at Citysearch
After trying to find something for my wife for V-day, I was appauled to discover what i did. Doesnt seem like I was the first. Wanting to be a supporter of privately owned companies, these people made it very tough to want to come back. My only advice for this place is to dont assume they know who their talking to. I can see turning that place into a parking lot to create more parking for the better stores on that street. 17 thumbs down on this wannabe boutique. Perfect example of what happens if our youth is not hugged enough.
- Pros: location
- Cons: customer service, attractivness of help, poor display
Horrible Owner...
by dawndawn at Citysearch
I must say this store has the rudest owner. I was returning a shirt that had a spot on it I received from Christmas along with a necklace I simply did not like. She refused to give me the same shirt without the mark and saying I don't take care of my things. She took it so personal and was so rude and disrespectful to me. She accused me of spotting the shirt and would not give me a new one. I have since told numerous people along with the salon I go to down the street to no longer go there, and believe me I was told a few other places not to go so I know the word gets spread of how rude you are! I could not believe an owner would treat someone like this who spends $1000 every couple months thereWhos loss is it really?
- Pros: rcv $ from a credit
BELCOTOM

Great Store, Great People and a great selection of "intelligent" fashion.
Special attention is given to make the shopper feel good. Their offer is very unique and allows you to compose a personal wardrobe without finding it on every corner of the street.
Check out their great selection of accessories like bags and cool Brani belts from Europe.
- Pros: selection, staff, value for money
- Cons: parking, out of town
outstanding!

Heather and her staff at Public I are second to none. Their MENS clothing is the best in the city. I have never once been intimidated shopping at Public I as I have been at several other MENS clothing boutiques in Wicker Park/Bucktown. I enjoy the shopping experience, and love the clothes that they carry!
- Pros: one of a kind clothes, Superior Service
Fabulous Fashionistas
by tulip0422 at Citysearch
I have been shopping at Public I for many years and have not found another boutique in the city that has level of service and knowledge that Julia and Heather bring to their customers. Yes their fashions and accesories can be a bit pricey...but throughout the years I have learned from these two about quality, different fabrics, cost per wear, etc. that help me to understand and now expect a certain level of quality in my clothes. They know their stuff, educate their customers and help us to build a versatile wardrobe that lasts over time. I'd rather buy one pair of pants at Public I that will last me many years than 5 trendy shirts that would end up costing more...and I'd wear for one season.
- Pros: good parking, knowledgable staff, quality merchandise
Fashionista Nirvana
by jen_jones3333 at Citysearch
Public I has an excellent selection of very wearable, sometimes classic, yet, fun clothing, as well as a mighty fine selection of designer handbags and jewelry. PI is a boutique, so generally all of their designers are small "labels." (Don't know the proper fashion lingo.) Their clothing is very versatile, which is why I tend to spend most of my money there. I can mix-it-up a bit between my work and casual wear, so all my money isn't spent buying clothing. Or is it anyway? PI always has something new that I absolutely must have. Most imortantly, the manager of the store creates a friendly atmosphere, and always tells the truth about how you look in a garment - sale or no sale.
- Pros: Great Clothing, Great Bags, Excellent Management
- Cons: Music Selection
