From one of the best to the worst
by CubsFan23 at Citysearch
I was at Matsuya this past Sunday and I have to say the restaurant has gone down hill DRASTICALLY. I used to eat there a lot and always enjoyed the food. But I hadnt in a while and I found out the hard way. Me and my friends ordered nigiri, some rolls and sashimi. The fish looked horrible as there was no color to them and they smelled "fishy". When we tasted it, they tasted stale and old. We complained to the waiter and asked for a manager and he said there was no manager there. We asked another waitress and she said the same thing and told her about the food. she then told the waiter to take off for the Sushi. He only took off for 3 pieces of nigiri. We complained, but they did nothing. Well, thanks to that awful fish. My friends and I all got sick and pretty sure we got food poisoning. I will never step foot into that restaurant. The only good thing is, that they will be closed soon as their lease runs up and the new hotel will be built in that spot.
- Pros: NONE
- Cons: Sushi, Nigiri, Sashimi, Rolls, Service
DONT GET THE CHICKEN
by Sarah722 at Citysearch
So after reading a few great reviews on this place, some friends and i decided to try it. There was a great deal on a combination meal with sushi and chicken teriyaki and a few other things. The sushi was good but the chicken was disgustingggggg. I didnt even take a bite, a few of my friends did but I dont even want to guess what part of the "chicken" it was. Then they were very rude about taking it back even though it was clearly inedible. I never complain but it was seriously the grossest thing i have ever seen. It ended up being a huge ordeal and the chef even came out to talk to us about how the chicken was fine. Umm isnt the customer always right??? Anyway , the sushi is very good, but if you dont like fish youre not going to find much that you like there...
Authentic Japanese food
by NicholasXYZ at Citysearch
This is one of our favorite restaurants. We have been to Japan and find this to be very authentic. I like most everything on the menu. The sushi is not the best, however. But, I highly recommend all the other items on the menu. The absolute best Miso soup in the City.
- Pros: Great Japanese menu
- Cons: Not the best for sushi
Great Japanese Food!
by junior73 at Citysearch
Its wonderful that they have both great sushi and great Japanese food. This is a great place to start those who are new to this cuisine and great for those who like variety in Japanese food outside of sushi. Reasonably priced and an accommodating staff. One of the very few spots in Chicago that I frequent on a regular basis and suggest to friends. I do not reccommend calling for delivery. Its just not the same.
- Pros: Great Selection of Nigiri and House Rolls along with a warm menu
- Cons: Delivery may be speedy but lack the quality
So glad we dropped in

My boyfriend and I smelled something great while driving down Clark and decided, at 9:00pm on Saturday night, to stop into Matsuya. We had never been before and it was wonderful. We got the tempura platter to share which was so so so good, huge prawns were included in the vegetable tempura.
We also got the sashimi/sushi platter and had 4 different sashimi (red snapper, salmon, eel and tuna) along with a california roll. I had never had hude chunks of raw fish like that and they were SO GOOD and high quality.
The last thing we got was a chicken satay on skewers, and I think this was the best chicken dish I have had in a long time. We each got miso soup and rice along with it, and everything was just so good and unexpected.
The staff was unpretentious, courteous, and not in your way if that is the type of waitress/waiter you would prefer. I love this experiece, we plan to go back ASAP.
- Pros: great value, high quality food, affordable
Lovely!!

A peaceful atmosphere for casual dining. Service is great, but the wait for food is a bit long. The food is Okay, but what keeps me coming back is the specialty sushi, the Godzilla Roll!! It is an amazing, mouthwatering, and monstrous roll!! Incredibly tasty and fulfilling! Definitely do not miss this magnificent sushi roll!!
- Pros: Specialty Sushi, Price value
Unfresh...
by jeatl at Citysearch
The ambience feels more quaint and cozy - not pretentious. The food tasted good, but did not taste fresh. The sushi ended up hurting my stomach. However, I have heard from others that it is good, and you definitely can't complain about the prices. However, I would suggest if you're willing to pay more money go somewher else.
- Pros: price, casual
- Cons: old fish
How'd it get rated so high?

Please tell me that this isn't one of the top Sushi places in Chicago. I moved back after being gone 15 years, and I remember coming here back when I was a bit less experienced. Our server was pleasant, but all the servers are either overworked or really disorganized. The food's just passable -- both sushi and cooked. And the room? Boring. Maybe I'm spoiled from years on the West Coast -- but I'm sure Chicago must have much better sushi.
- Pros: Nice server, Not a long wait
- Cons: , Room, Disorganized service
Wrigleyville sushi spot serves up Japanese favorites in a modest storefront space.

In Short
On a busy stretch of Clark Street, this clean, unpretentious sushi restaurant draws a regular crowd of maki-craving locals. The menu features traditional sushi and sashimi along with tempura and chicken and beef teriyaki and tempura, but rolls are the real favorites here. Specialty maki include the Philadelphia, with smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado and chopped onion, and the Windy City roll, with cooked tuna, mayonnaise, avocado and cucumber.
Not the same....

Matsuya use to be pretty good, but I must say their quality have not been great these few years. For sushi, I'll go elsewhere now!
I use to like to come here til I had a bad experience with a waitress. We got our check and payed and she had the nerves to come over and asked was the service not good and pretty much demanding more tips. What is up wioth that! Thank god she don't work there no more.
- Pros: Ambience
- Cons: Quality
