Great local restaurant
by twistah at Citysearch
The Melrose has everything you'd want out of a local diner. The food is good, though some things are considerably better than others, and the place has a good diner ambiance. The place is decorated with some crazy 80s new wave motif, but it adds to its character. (On most days the music matches the decor.) This may not be a place to make a trip for, but it's a good place to walk a few blocks to.
- Pros: Pretty decent food, good ambiance, mostly good service
- Cons: Some dishes aren't very good (but the food is good for the most part), services can be shaky on rare occasions
could be home
by sadico at Citysearch
The Melrose is comfortable, affordable, friendly and palatable. I've enjoyed the experience for years... and years... and years. It feeds the urban experience and is a great spot to bring out of towners to.
Everyone is welcomed to this haven... At any given time you can watch the local boys, the ladies of the North Shore and the bohemian youth contingency sit back and enjoy watching each other.
I couldn't recommend this place highly enough.
Awesome omlettes!
by kristen0218 at Citysearch
This place has the fluffiest, most well-stuffed omlettes for around $6! The service is always friendly & speedy. All breakfasts come with a piece of fruit (a whole orange or banana). Blitzes are great too! Great lazy-weekend brunch place with no frills.
- Pros: Good value, Quick Service, Stick-to-your-ribs!
Too many kids
by chadozzchgo at Citysearch
This is become the new daytime day care for lazy young parents who bring their kids in and let them run around. Better yet, the staff and management allow the kids to run all over the resturant and even put out free candy for them. Stay away if you are not looking for a loud, kid crazy resturant.
- Pros: 24 Hours, Lakeview = Location
- Cons: KIDS EVERYWHERE, SLOW servive, Crowded
Neighborhood standby slings simple, basic coffee-shop fare all day and night in the heart of Boys Town.

In Short
Teal booths, quirky paintings and pink-neon accents give this place a true diner feel. Crowds vary from punk kids and tipsy revelers at 4am to grandparents and gay couples at Sunday breakfast. On the menu: diner fare like three-egg omelettes stuffed with anything from jalapenos and onions to sauteed apples and cheddar cheese. Hungover? Try the Hobo, a skillet of hash browns topped with melted cheese and two eggs.
Always a classic

You can always count on Melrose to be a late night retreat. I hate that they stopped allowing dogs on they're patio but they're still one of my favorites for cabbage soup.
Enjoy!
Friend of the Neighborhood
by dmc17 at Citysearch
Melrose restaurant is my default when I'm in need of good square meal. Take even the most finicky eaters there; the menu has everything. Service is typically friendly and prompt. Food value is good and most dinner entrees come with soup or salad and bread. It's a diner/family restaurant so shoes and shirt is about the only dress requirement. Great patio during the warm months with beautiful colorful hanging plants on the perimeter. Also a dog water bowl for your pooch. If you're lucky you might be able to find a meter but more than likely most people walk there. People watching: expect to see your boystown crowd but also a diverse mixture of all other types.
- Pros: Good portions, Good service, Comfort food
- Cons: No parking lot
Typical all-night diner
by dan_in_lakeview at Citysearch
This place is a Boystown institution. The food is typical diner fare and portions are hefty. A great place to eat late at night after the bars close. The decor is a bit garish but hey, it's a diner.
- Pros: Open all night, Outdoor patio, Ample portions
- Cons: Tough street parking
