I can't believe what I saw. First, I thought my buddy had ditched me, however, I noticed my friend being dragged outside. Little to be known, my friend is a martial artiest and could have made an embarassing scene, however, he choose to be led out. Why the doorman did this, no one knows, he didn't even't want to let us know he "kicked" our buddy out. I have always had a good time at Matilda's previously, but I doubt I will ever be back.

Eclectic atmosphere, no TV's, great music and decent food. Plus, the back room has several nice booths to hang out in... Love it...
Pros: No TV's, Comfortable, Good Music
Cons: Can get crowded

My friends and I love Matilda's! It's got really great food and a jammin' jukebox that is updated frequently. The atmosphere is eclectic, yet hip. You can enjoy playing pool or darts in the upstairs, with the added bonus of not having to fight smoke. Or you can make your way downstairs where you can dance and light one up. We actually rented a part of Matilda's out for a birthday bash! The bartenders were very friendly and efficient, the atmosphere was intimate, and we were able to bring our own iPod of music to listen to. Matildas is a great deal with a real neighborhood feel! Check it out!

Matilda was the first bar/restaurant I became familiar with when I moved to Chicago over two years ago, and its still one of my top three favorite places in the city. Because of the cozy/quirky atmosphere, friendly staff, and great juke box options it has the feel of a comfortable neighborhood dive, without actually looking like one. Its a classy place with top-notch food and drinks, and a fun place to hang out for a solo drink after work, a casual date, or with a group of friends.

I live nearby and I consider Matilda to be the only worthwhile option in the neighborhood. The food is delicious, the music is always solid and the staff is extremely friendly. The beer selection is diverse, ranging from PBR (value), to something really German with an impossible to pronounce name (quality). Best of all, the environment accommodates both quiet conversation and rambunctious dancing. Matilda is always a great night waiting to happen!

I have been to Matilda's many times and it is an awesome bar. I have comments about two different types of experiences there, regular visits and private parties (in Baby Atlas). First thing that stands out is the funky atmosphere and the sign saying you must be 23 to enter. The decor is visually interesting and inviting. I've had several menu items, including the flatbreads, fish tacos, and wings. They are all excellent. The staff is a huge plus, extremely friendly and really add to the experience. I have also thrown several parties in Baby Atlas. If you have a group of say up to 50 this is one of the most fun places to have your party. The $25 / 3 hours is totally reasonable and you can bring your own ipod for music if you want. I don't know how it happens but by the end of the night we're always dancing like maniacs. You'd be hard pressed to find a better combination of fun, service, and value than Matilda's
Pros: Location, Bartenders, Food
Cons: Steep Stairs, Small Bathroom

My favorite bar in chicago. The jukebox is incredible, food is affordable and tasty, and the staff's friendly. Somehow the place has managed to divide two entirely different atmospheres; lounge upstairs and funky dance dive downstairs. Surrounded by the neighborhoods of lincoln park, lakeview, wriggleville, and boystown the crowd is always diverse.

Matilda/Baby Atlas is by far my favorite bar in Chicago... has been for nearly 10 years, and always will be! The atmosphere is great: eclectic, modern industrial style decor but still with a sense of warmth; pool tables for those inclined; great juke box (you won't find the typical Lincoln Park Top 40 on here); much-better-than-pub-food fare; and a fun, welcoming staff. Come in early and take a minute to get to know the staff and management; you won't be disappointed. Take a trek downstairs (be careful on the stairs!) to check out the more intimate confines of Baby Atlas. A broader clientele on weekends makes for good eye candy, with a healthy mix of casual and trendy. Drink prices have risen a bit over the past few years, but it's still the best place on Chicago's northside to meet friends for a drink any time!
Pros: Ambiance, Food, People

I have now made it to Matilda several times, and have fallen in love. The decor, somewhat dark and sensual, creates a wonderfully relaxed ambience. The music rocks--last time I was there they were rolling through a Pink Floyd album. The drinks are plentiful, as they have an extensive tap with some great selections (Harp, Stella, Fat Tire...). However, my typical motivation for a trip to Matilda is for the food. I had one of the best burritos of my life here (hard to beat one made with filet mignon), and it is impossible to find a better deal than their $1 fish tacos. Highly recommended if you're looking to enjoy some quality food and drink in a great atmosphere.
Pros: ambience, food, beer selection, specials, 23+ crowd

Matilda's is always a good place to relax after work or on a Friday night. Their broiled tomato and cheese appetizer is really great. Actually, I've never had a bad eating experience there.
