Best Ethiopian Restaurant in the USA
by SusanZ30
The best ethiopian restaurant in Chicago! I travel a lot and have eaten at ethiopian restaurants around the globe and this is the best ethiopian restaurant. There is an ethiopian restaurant in "little ethiopia" in Washington DC that comes close to providing the quality and taste of the food but DC has the largest ethipian population and has a ton of ethiopian restaurants. I have tried every ethiopian restaurant in chiago and Evanston and have finally found the best. My husband is not an adventorous eater and it really took him 2 times to love it and recommend it to friends. I will be honest, the sour bread suprises people and it takes coming back knowing what to expect in terms of sharing the food from the same plate, eating with your hands and the taste of the bread. We have now taken a number of our friends to this restaurant and everyone loves it. I recommend going on a Saturday when they have a live band because it just completes the wonderful atmosphere. The people are very friendly. The host is always very helpful, whether it is suggesting a food option or suggesting a place to watch the football game after dinner, he is happy to help. The food is fresh and not greasy, which can be a problem at other places. The bread is freshly made every day and it should be soft and spongy so if you go to other places like the one in evanston and the bread is hard then you know to leave that place and come to the Ethiopian Diamond beacuse it really is a diamond in the rough. The food will fill you up and for a cheap price. I usually order the vegetarian combo (I am not a vegetarian but still love this combo) and my husband will order a spicy beef dish and of course we will share. The beef dish comes in a large portion and then you get about 8 different vegetable side dishes that you can share. It is a perfect combo. I also recommend you enjoy tea at the end of dinner it is fabulous. To end, this is the BEST ethiopian restaurant in chicago, try it!
- Pros: Great food, great music, great price, friendly staff, parking, reservations accepted,
- Cons: It is difficult for staff to understand you sometimes

Went here for lunch on a Friday, and it didn't disappoint. I ordered Doro Watt (chicken) and my girlfriend had a delicious spinach entree. The injera is delicious, as is their tea. I wanted to try their much-ballyhooed coffee too, but I had already my caffeine fix for the day. Ethiopian Diamond's staff is very personable, friendly, and helpful. The portions are a little small for the prices charged, but the quality of the food is very high. Recommended.
- Pros: Food, service, general enjoyment
- Cons: Portions are just a little small for the prices charged
My favorite restaurant in Chicago!
by 773chicago
Wow, the food here is amazing! I stumbled on this restaurant a few months ago, and I was blown away. It's all so good, but try the shimbra assa, a fried chick pea cake in a really tasty spicy red sauce. This is a specialty of the restaurant and very very delicious. I love the way the injera is cooked here, it's a little thinner than at Ras Dashen. An excellent choice!
- Pros: The red lentils here are so good!
- Cons: Are there any? I just wish it were closer to my apartment!
Excellent Ethiopian!

The food was delicious, the service great, and the prices were very reasonable. Our water glasses were filled constantly and we didn't feel rushed at all while we enjoyed a fantastic meal. We left stuffed and happy. We were really glad to have stumbled upon this place and can't wait to go back!
- Pros: delicious food, great service, good portion size
Best Ethiopian Food!

The veggie platter is the best choice - even if you are a meat-eater. Service is so-so, but the food makes it worthwhile. Never seems crowded too.
Forget the rest -Diamonds is #1

My boyfriend and I [vegetarians] -longtime regulars to this gem, in our neighborhood. Even having our own designated table and exchange holiday cards with the employees. We always take our out-of-town guests here -veg. and meat eaters alike- and they soon become converts -praising our choice. The food is full of flavor, texture and served in a timely matter. A suggestion to newbies -Choose one of their "Taste of Ethiopia" platters -If there are two of you, order the "Taste of Ethiopia for 1," vs. 2 -The Taste for 2 is perfect for 3 or 4 people. The employees are the best, warm/friendly and accommodating people. [Who are happy to explain the various dishes, for any newbies.] The atmosphere is spacious and comfortable. Another added bonus -Regardless of how busy -You can dine leisurely and won't feel rushed. Beware though, once you try Diamonds -You will start to crave it.

In Short
In the Ethiopian tradition, diners eat with their hands off big communal platters lined with edible dough. The menu offers lamb, beef, chicken, shrimp and assa (orange roughy), as well as nine vegetarian options. Highly recommended dishes include anything cooked "watt" style, with a sweet-and-savory blend of chili, ginger, garlic and mystery spices. For dessert, head for the destaye, a hot pastry stuffed with pistachios, raisins and cardamom and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Diamond's has excellent food, especially for vegetarians, great service, and authentic Ethiopian decor. The traditional food is fun to eat with our fingers using injera, the wheat bread. Friends love the chicken and beef tibs. I love all the vegetarian selelctions, from greens and spicy lentils to cabbage with carrots and lightly seasoned potatoes.
- Pros: Inexpensive, Value, Fun to Eat
