Music junkies get what they need at this beloved local music store on the west side.

The Scene
Ozzy and Madonna watch over this small, flashy storefront with its appropriately psychedelic logo; after all, the store first opened in 1971. A giant RCA dog silently greets you as you enter this blast of music and color. CDs cover the ceiling and hundreds more dangle from it, casting rainbow reflections across wandering music junkies. Salespeople hover, assisting lost customers and probably preventing them from pocketing unprotected CDs.
The Goods
Know what you want? Find it alphabetically by genre: Rock takes up most of the space, but there's a decent selection of jazz, classical, country, reggae, blues, comedy, oldies, soundtracks and kid's music. You'll likely spot that import you're looking for too. If you're just browsing, spend some time at the listening stations, where about 60 CDs are out for sampling. New releases and super buys fill the back wall, with everything from Linkin Park to Creed to Celine Dion.

i remember going to rolling stones in the 80s wheni could buy a RECORD. they still have an excellent selection, but they do not carry all of the imports that are available. you have to ask if they can special order certain albums. as far as free stuff, if you're not into certain artists, you're not going to get much.
- Pros: mid-priced cds, good atmosphere
- Cons: parking is difficult
GOTTA GO JUST ONCE.

I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE ATMOSPHERE AND
THE COOL DISPLAYS. THEY CAN BE A BIT PRICEY.
THEY MAY HAVE COPIES OF RECORDINGS THAT ARE HARD TO FIND. I WOULDN'T MAKE THE TRIP TO SHOP ALL THE TIME-NOT EVEN SURE I WOULD GO BACK AGAIN, BUT YA GOTTA GO AT LEAST ONCE...JUST TO SAY YOU DID! IF YO ARE A MUSIC LOVER...YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. GO!
- Pros: DISPLAYS, SELECTION, SERVICE
- Cons: PARKING, LOCATION, PRICE
The best record store worldwide.

Rolling Stones is quite possibly the best record store i have ever had the pleasure of shopping at throughout the world, and i've been to many places. The selection is fantastic. If they dont happen to have what you want (which isnt likely) theyll order it for you. The prices arent that high either, granted it's not as cheap as Best Buy, but you get more than your moneys worth. If you're any where near Rolling Stones, definitely check it out! If you're lucky you'll get there on a nite when they have a real life band there. And they're big name bands, like korn, tool, NIN, metallica, and many others.
- Pros: great selection, personable staff, live performances
- Cons: parking at mall
my fountain of youth

Now that I've entered my thirtysomething years, I have to admit that my musical tastes have mellowed somewhat. Nevertheless, I still enjoy going the the local record shop and rubbing elbows with the kiddies. And Rolling Stones Records is one of my favorite places to do that. The atmosphere is very much "independent record shop" However, the quality of the selection is hit and miss. For many older musical groups, the selection consists of maybe the 3 most popular albums plus a greatest hits compilation. For newer music, the selection is much better (of course). Best of all, they have a very good selection of music dvd's. The only downside to this shop is that it's located in a dying neighborhood (my opinion), and it's located next to Harlem-Irving Plaza--a lousy excuse for a mall.
- Pros: anti-chain atmosphere, reasonable prices
- Cons: location
