Great sandwich at an affordable price!

by james1970

Found Eppy's on this site. Really good experience. A work buddy and I headed over to give it a shot. I had a turkey sandwich and a cup of the chicken chili. My friend had a reuben sandwich. All were above average. The other thing that I liked about the place was the twist on pricing the side dishes. The sides were priced at the temperature outside! So, my buddy got a couple of cold sides for .19 cents!

Definitely head over if you are looking for a good sandwich at a fair price. I would tell you that as the lunch hour went on, their was people waiting for a table so go early.

Cozy deli in the Loop serves thickly stuffed sandwiches, fresh salads and hearty soups. Breakfast is also served.

Worst Deli in Chicago...

by langer1979

...and that includes White Hen. I had the extreme misfortune of going to Eppys new Franklin St. location in the Loop. It was 12:30PM on a Thursday, the place was half-full, and here is a list of what this pathetic excuse for a deli was out of:

- Pastrami

- Soup (all four flavors)

- Tomatoes

- Ice

I feel bad for those poor saps who wandered in around 1:30 for a late lunch - they were probably left to serve themselves from the plentiful garbage that littered the floor. On top of that, the "hot corned beef" was cold and the macaroni salad was un-edible. Seriously, how do you screw up macaroni salad? The thousands of people who bring this simple dish to church pot-lucks seem to have no trouble...why is it so hard for Eppys?

With Perrys (a truly great deli) two doors away and re-opening on 1/2/08, I doubt that Eppys sad sack deli will last past 1/3/07. Truth be told, I would rather be wacked in the head repeatedly with a hammer while listening to the Chipmunks soundtrack on repeat than eat at Eppys again. Yes, you heard me correctly, the Chipmunks.

With a review like this, many of you may think I am a deli-snob from New York. I am not - I have lived in the midwest all my life, and this place is still a disgrace to the deli community. If a New Yorker were to eat here, their head would probably explode. Seriously, everyone take heed...DO NOT EAT HERE!

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Out of everything, dirty, un-helpful staff, small sandwhiches

Larry the owner is half the fun

by tomangie1

Don't pay attention to people complaining about Larry the owner or the atmosphere of this place. He was inspired by the Soup N*** on Seinfeld - this isn't a child daycare center it's a deli. It's a damn good one too. The sandwiches are huge and have quality meat and real fresh veggies. There are tons of loyal regulars (trust me I know, I live in the neighborhood) and a lot of them are New Yorkers getting a taste of home. I recommend this place to anyone who likes quality deli sandwiches.

  • Pros: sandwiches with healthy helpings of meat
  • Cons: wish they delivered

GREAT REUBENS, CHICKEN SALAD, AND SOUPS

by dajew

EPPYS FOOD IS GREAT, AND YOU CAN'T BEAT THE VALUE. EPPYS PATIO IS VERY BIG, AND CAN ACCOMIDATE LARGER GROUPS FROM THE OFFICES. IF YOUR ON A DIET THE SALADS ARE THE BEST, GREAT DRESSINGS.

  • Pros: GREAT STAFF
  • Cons: SUBWAY CUSTOMERS FROM NEXT DOOR

Avoid the owner!

by aa11sys0p

I was exited when a "real" deli opened just down the street from my office. However, I was quite disappointed with Eppys. The food is average (there are major bread issues they have yet to figure out), seating is cramped, and it's a little pricey for what you get (even with the "neighborhood" discount). However, the worst part of the experience is "Mr. Eppy" himself (the owner). He lays in waiting for unsuspecting customers to walk and proceeds to give them the hard sell that scares many newcomers away. He also has a terrible habit of berating employees in front of everyone and he has an unnatural hatred of the Subway next door. Somehow Eppys has managed to survive despite him and the so-so food.

  • Pros: Good soup
  • Cons: In-your-face owner, So-so food

Finally! A deli with some personality!

by kristen0218

I thought these delis didn't exist in the midwest! Eppy's has New York deli personality. Eppy himself is on hand most of the days I go for lunch, shoo-ing Subway patrons away from his patio (and rightly so). I don't know why anyone would go to the Subway next door instead of this place. The breads & bagels are fantastic. The sandwiches are absolutely stacked with meat or chicken/whitefish/whatever salad. The sandwiches come with 2 sides that are always fresh & homemade too. Plus they have a ton of different mustards to choose from. Great!

  • Pros: Freshness, Atmosphere, Quality
  • Cons: Subway customers
