User Reviews for The Motel Bar

2 Star Rating: Below Average

This place is favorite among my coworkers sinply because there isn't really anything else close by. It scores for convenience. I do like atmosphere for the most part, however the wait staff, though very pleasing to the eye, are very displeasing service wise. Even on slow nights we need to go to the bar to order or else we are left waiting with empty glasses. The bartenders are very good, friendly, and knowledgeable. The waitresses really ruin the experience.

Pros: Good food, good atmosphere

Cons: Abysmal waitstaff

My partner and I went there on a Sunday night. Not too busy. We sat at the bar and was happy to learn that they served food. Loved the classic cocktail list. The grilled wings were AWESOME! The burger was okay and the house salad was quite large. I couldn't get over the prices. Very inexpensive for a Chicago bar. My house salad was only 3 bucks! Paul ordered a Maker's Old Fashioned and I had Dewar's Rusty Nail. Each of those were only 8 bucks. I can't get a classic cocktail anywhere for under $12. The decor was awesome. Loved the high ceilings and the upholstered wall and ceiling. Very cool! Our bartender Audrey was amazing!

Pros: Great Service, Inexpensive

Cons: Parking

I went with my brother after dinner one night to meet a friend of his and I didn't feel like drinking. I ordered/received the best Shirley Temple I've ever had with brandy-soaked cherries as a garnish. Waitress was very nice and made sure everything was okay.

Pros: decor, staff, drink list

This place still seems to be working out its quirks. About half of the waitstaff/bartenders were friendly and helpful, the other half were snotty and rude. My friend and I ordered two drinks from a bartender---after she took our order she left the bar for 10 minutes offering no explanation, came back and asked for our order again, and then proceeded to charge us double of what the bartender on the other side of the bar charged us for the same drinks. When we explained this to her, she snipped back at us that the other bartender under-charged us and continued to demand $24 for 2 drinks. The crowd was also a strange mix....a combination of suburban "moms" and the typical yuppies you'd expect at this establishment. Although the decor is impressive and hip, I probably will not go back.

Pros: Stylish decor

Cons: Rude waitstaff, Strange crowd

Yes, it's hip and trendy. Yes, the decor and drink selection harken back to the '70s, '60s and even '50s. The music definitely did not fit the decor--it was as bland and generic as could be (overplayed pop and rap music). The worst part, however, was that we waited ten minutes for our waitperson to notice us, then fifteen more minutes for our order to arrive--which it never did. And it was only mildly busy--a weeknight after work. The entire staff seemed confused and even a little lost. It was a very unpleasant experience.

Pros: hip decor

Cons: bland music, incompetent service
