INCREDIBLY BAD SERVICE: BILLING PROBLEMS
by alonzoquijana
February 22, 2009
AVOID! I have had repeated billing problems. This place should be investigated for credit card fraud. Oh, the gym itself? OK. But lots of attitude. And again, recurring billing on card is a disaster, and no ammount of complaining to head office in NY will get your problem fixed. AVOID, AVOID. AVOID.
- Pros: Modern
- Cons: Dark. Attitude. BILLING PROBLEMS!!!
The Absolute Truth

I'm a gym guy. I've read reviews on every gym in Chicago, and been a member of about 7 different ones. After walking through Barton a year ago, I still wasn't convinced it was for me. Then I read some reviews over the summer that were good and some not so good. Last month I finally jumped on board. So far, it's the best gym I've been a member of. Of course there are some pros and cons, and it's not always perfect, but there is something about this place that I look forward to. The lobby staff is super friendly. They greet me every day I'm in there. The place is spotless including the showers and steam room. The equipment is awesome. I haven't taken any of the classes yet, but they look pretty insane, and I actually see a lot of guys taking them. I've observed some of the training sessions, and I haven't seen a bad one yet. Not one trainer with a cell phone ! If you are looking for a serious place to workout, I recommend Bartons. If you are looking for absolute perfection every time you walk in, good luck in your search.
Credit Card Scam!!
by DavidJF

Beware of David Barton Gym. Once you join, they'll never stop charging your credit card -- no matter if you've filled out the proper paper work, spoken to the proper people, gotten verbal and written approvals, etc. They'll keep charging and charging and charging and charging. Watch out. It's a scam.
- Cons: fraudulent and illegal credit-card scam
I wish it was on the west coast

This is a great gym! I flew into Chicago for the weekend and needed a place to workout. The staff was very accomodating and professional. The equipment was top notch and very clean. The facility is also visually appealing with the soothing dimmed lighting. I would describe the gym as an urban-spa fusion. I have worked out at many gyms across the country and I would have to put this in my top 10 list. David Barton has done a great job with the structure and feel of this gym. The only negative thing I would have to say about this gym is that we need one on the west coast! I'll be the first one to sign up.
- Pros: Upscale, clean, comfortable
- Cons: Not on the west coast yet

Let me start by saying I was a member before and moved out of the city. I am sooooo happy to be back at DBG !!! When I walked in, almost 2 years after leaving, the staff still knew my name. How crazy is that??? If anything, this gym keeps getting better with age. I recently picked up with a trainer, and I am almost ready to put on my bikini !!! Service, Training, Atmosphere !!! This gym has it all !!!
P.S. I love the DJ on Thursday nights!
a gym for the body and the senses

finally, a gym that appeals to my senses AND my needs!
from the moment i entered the space, with its floor to ceiling windows, offering a view of open air and water, i felt welcome. the feeling continued when i was greeted by the first staffer at the check in desk, and then with eric mejia, who is one of the enrollment team assigned to me. he was informative, not high pressure, and super friendly without being weirdly familiar.
the lighting, none of which is fluorescent, is low enough to be calming, but not so dark to be dungeon like. the olfactory aspect is great! no old gym shoes/chlorine aromas to assault the senses. the music is just loud enough to provide rhythm without drowning out conversation.
locker rooms, clean, dimly lit, with an aromatherapy room reminiscent of a well scented rain forest at dusk. i'm not big on saunas, but they have one of those as well. everything, from shampoos to towels to lotions are provided, so you don't have to schlep products along with your gym attire.
my trainer, mike, was amazing. low key approach, listened to my specific concerns, and addressed them all with my first training session. none of the "run through the machine circuit" approach from him, but a well rounded, full body workout that left me feeling well educated and able to address my issues without needing machinery. i can't say enough good things about him.
when you do want to use the machines, they're clean and well maintained, there are tons of free weights as well as other equipment, and a great range of cardio choices. classes in pilates, yoga, spin are available, but i haven't tried out any as yet. will update at a later time.
so, so far, five stars for ambiance, attitude, and performance. couldn't ask for more. plus, after you've worked out, you can sink into their cushy chairs and spend some time just letting the view do its wonders.
- Pros: ambience, quality of instruction

When I went in to the gym, I was a little thrown off because it didn't feel like a gym. I was immediately greeted, and my salesperson was super cool. Let's face it, what guy wants to admit he needs a trainer to get in shape. I used to be in shape. How hard could it be. After talking with her, and seeing the gym I realized that if I was going to get my college body back 10 years later I would need a trainer. I am so happy I made that decision. My trainer is the best. In three months I'm down two inches in my waist and I never felt better. I even go into the gym on my own now too. The equiment is awesome. The atmosphere is very cool, and makes me feel kind of anonymous. The best part is when I'm done, I love to go in their steam room. Do yourself a favor, and check this place out!
- Pros: Best trainers, atmosphere, service, locker rooms
- Cons: location is a little out of the way
The Best

I had just moved to Chicago, and was in desperate need of losing an extra 10. I've checked out about a dozen gyms in my lifetime, and after reading the reviews was a little nervous about going to David Barton. After I met with my associate, and he introduced me to my trainer, I realized how silly I was. The gym is a little flashy, but I have a ton of fun, and actually look forward to going. Imagine that, looking forward to going to the gym. My trainer is incredible, and in 2 short months I dropped my 10. They are super friendly. Even the front desk guy knows my name. The place is always spotless, and I've never had to wait for equipment when I'm not training. I would defiinately recommend getting a trainer. I don't think I could have done it without mine, but the classes are great as well.
It wasn't easy to find this place, but it's worth it. It's the best gym I've been to.
- Pros: Service, Training, Cleanliness, Classes

I wasn't looking for a clubby feel when I came in so after reading the reviews, I was a little hesitant. After talking with a rep there, I figured why not try a training session. 6 months later, I am still hooked. These guys are the best. They remember my name, who I train with, they even remembered my birthday !!! I had been a member of several gyms before, but I am in the best shape of my life right now, and having a great time doing it. When I'm not training with AJ and Saddi, I take some of the classes. They are very intense, but a lot of fun. This gym has something you can't put your finger on, but when I look around, everyone seems to be having fun. Mind you, they are sweating and getting tortured, but having fun. I would recommend this gym to anyone and everyone. I can't wait for Spring so I can show off my new body with a new wardrobe.
- Pros: Training, Classes, Service
- Cons: none

Love this gym! For those of you who love to work out, but need a little nudge to get to the gym and work hard, this place gives you a full on kick in the a*s. Music is motivating, although sometimes a little too loud. The staff is usually receptive when you ask to turn it down, but you have to ask. Locker rooms are great - Bumble & bumble products -wow. The vibe is cool - a little clubby, "place to be seen" type of thing, but it makes going to the gym more fun. Classes are killer - taught by the trainers. No lodi dodi aerobics here. Only complaint is that the locker rooms need a little ventilation. Gets a little warm when several people are showering and/or using hair dryers at the same time.
- Pros: classes, locker rooms, vibe
- Cons: locker rooms too warm
