No service for me
by ladibugg765 at Citysearch
My mom and I attempted to eat dinner at this establishment earlier this evening. I live about a block away from the restaurant and this was my first attempt to dine there. Unfortunately, the staff ignored our presence. I am African American and when my mom and I stepped in we waited to be helped. The hostess proceeded to help a Caucasian individual who came in after us. My and mom I stepped up to the desk to make sure they knew we were waiting and another hostess proceeded to help another Caucasian individual who came in the restaurant after us and stepped up to the desk after us. At that point, I asked to speak with the manager. I was surprised to learn that the manager was standing behind the desk the whole time. I explained to him that we had been waiting to be seated and two individuals who came in after us were helped first. The manager looked at me like I was crazy and simply said do you need something. No apology for the poor service...nothing. I was stunned. People can make honest mistakes and it is possible the hostesses simply were not paying attention. However, the response I received from the manager was unacceptable. Needless to say, my mom and I left the restaurant and went to eat a fabulous meal next door at Exposure Tapas.
Worst than frozen food.

June 2008, went to Zapatista for dinner. Had the fajita for two (chicken and tilapia). And three margaritas (regular sized). The bill was around 80 dollars! The chicken was tasteless. The tilapia was very salty and ?fishy? tasting, a sign that it was on the very opposite spectrum of fresh. The fajita came out with just the tortillas (3 tiny ones) and the meat. We were told we have to order the toppings separately. When we did the side was: a tablesppon of cheese, a tablespoon of lettuce, a tablespoon of guacamole. These were to be shared by fajitas for two adults. It was the worst rip off I?ve experienced in a restaurant in a long time. I will never go back and will inform all out friends of this. If you need dinner, skip this place!
- Pros: cute patio
- Cons: bad food

Best Mexican Food in Chicago!

If you love Mexican food, you have to go to this restaurant. It is delicious! I had to write a review because of all the negative comments about the food. Yes, the service is mediocre and you will often have to remind them twice of a request and the restaurant is noisy. Try to go at a less crowded time and you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend the carna al sada steak, the guacomole with jicama, and the chocolate soufle dessert, yum!
- Pros: Great food!!!
- Cons: Poor service, noisy
AVOID this place!

Service was great. Drinks- GREAT but food is horrible. I live in the South Loop, 3rd time there (now i remember why I only go once a year) and every time I go there I swear I will never return. My enceladas was served cold, and my wife's chicken tasted like carboard... the corn tortillas was the size of a quarter???? went home and was much more satified with a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich!
People are crazy to waste their money here!!!!!!
- Pros: Ambience, Service, Drinks
- Cons: Food is horrible!!
Best Mexican Ever

This is by far the best mexican food my wife and I have ever had. I used to travel for a living and love mexican food so I would try different mexican foods in different cities, and this is the best I have ever had. We recently moved to the south loop and thought we would try it out. The fajitas, tacos, even the burritos are excellent. You must try this place out. I recommend the fajitas, they are truly unique. If you like tequila, get a tequila flight!! Friday and Saturday nights you should probably have a reservation. Hope to see you there!!
- Pros: Food, drinks
- Cons: soft lighting
Friendly staff, good food, decent value

Took friends from out of town here. We had a party of five. The service was friendly and good. The food was good and fresh. It tends to be on the spicy side, especially the guacamole. It's a bit pricey for what you get, but that's the south loop for you. All in all, I can think of better places, but I would recommend this one if you want Mexican food and are in the south loop.
- Pros: Very nice staff
- Cons: A bit overpriced
Horrible

I had made reservations for 8 at this restaurant on a sunday afternoon at 4 pm. I arrived on time and i had to wait an half hour for my table to by set up. When they finally sey my table, it was for 6! When my guest arrived my snobby waitress took our drink orders and it took at least 15 minutes to bring 5 adult and 3 kid drinks. When everone ordered their food it took them a hour and 15 minutes to bring the food and it was cold! Then the server didnt bring 2 entrees. She never came back to give us drink refills but when it was time for the bill she brought it quickly and it had athe added gratuity that she didnt deserve because of her poor service. When everyone was done and was conversating one of the hostesses said we had to leave because our children were too loud ( ages 1, 2 and 3). I will NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone or return because the service was horrible and this is definately not a family restaurant!!!!

My husband & I live in the S.Loop and thought we'd found a great new mexican place..so not the case. We have been there twice and will NEVER go back. The 1st time we went was a Sat. evening, we had reservations for 7. We got there and were seated immediately, and then the trouble started. Our waiter couldn't have possibly rushed us more. Before we even had our coats off he was asking us what we wanted to drink, did we want an appetizer, which we hate. We tried to make it clear we weren't in a hurry, but, we were literally in and out in less than an hour. There were people still eating when we left, and they were there when we arrived! We swore to never go again, however, a friend wanted to go for a birthday dinner so we went again..again it was a disaster. The food was cold, the waiter kept forgetting about us, and, never brought the desert we ordered. After that we can safely say we will never waste another evening in Zapatista.
- Cons: Bad service, waiters rush you thru meal, overpriced, mediocre food.
