The Home Depot 'Promise' - and Selling Old Tools For New
by JoeBloggs at Citysearch
I tried the 'Home Depot promise' of "we'll beat any price plus reduce our price by a further 10%" on a new combo set of Ridgid power tools I found on Amazon.
Home Depot North Ave agreed to give me a new set at the same price, but refused to give me the 10% discount, saying that they do not regard Amazon as a competitor. Seems like they do not regard any other company that charges less than they do to be a competitor, making their promise an empty one (when it suits them).
As I had already placed a $2500 home delivery order with them, I accepted this reluctantly.
When the 'new' set of tools was delivered with the rest of my order, the package had been opened, the impact driver had been substitued for an old, used demo unit with marker writing all over it and some of the accessories were missing.
I spent hours on the phone trying to get a replacement, and was eventually told that they had sent me a 'clearance item', therefore would not replace it. After this, the manager refused to speak to me again.
So I got scammed into buying the 'new set' from Home Depot, then they scammed me into receiving an old set of tools with bits missing, instead of a new one, as promised.
I have taken the matter to the Fraud Department at the Consumer Dvision of the Illinois Attorney General's Office and am waiting for their response and action.
Whatever the outcome of this may be, Home Depot will never see me again.

This store is huge and well stocked with everytthing from plants to plasterboard. Electrical, plumbing, appliances, paints, carpet, windows, doors. Get the idea? If you have a project, you can pretty much get everything you need in one place. Nothing too high end mind you but good serviceable stuff at fair prices. Pretty good staff too

The Store
The mother of all hardware stores, Home Depot's size alone makes it worth a visit. Walking through this enormous warehouse with shelves that reach up to the sky, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the immense space and the amount of merchandise. But after a quick stroll, you'll soon discover that any item pertaining to home repair and maintenance is sure to be found here.
The Goods
Whether you have a nut in search of a bolt or a frame in search of a door, or even a second story that needs a staircase, you can find it here. From basic goods to luxury projects, such as home spas, it can be found at Home Depot.

I usually drop into Home Depot for one small item (usually a plant or some garden-related thing), but I end up wandering the aisles, dreaming about home-improvement. Odd? Yes. But I know I'm not alone. The variety at this store is good, and there's usually a nice range of prices and quality. Sometimes you'll run into an employee here that has no idea what you're looking for, but for the most part the staff is friendly and willing to help. If they can't answer your question, they'll help you track down someone who can.
- Pros: Good parking
